The best place to glide is right at the beginning of the match when you first jump of the battle bus. You can glide in other scenarios but not for long.

To make the most of the distance you should open your glider as soon as you jump. The disadvantage is you may be one of the last to reach the ground so plan accordingly if you want to survive longer than a few minutes.
